Chips Fresh Off The Farm
Urban - 27 Dec 2007
More spuds, this time, in the form of chips. On a potato farm in Herefordshire in Britain, spuds dug up in the morning are sometimes turned into chips by lunchtime. That’s the freshness guarantee on Tyrrells chips, made by a family that also grows its own potatoes.
Carrefour sells a selection of these handcooked chips in very tempting flavours. My favourites are from the root vegetable range: Natural Beetroot, Parsnip And Carrot chips and the Parsnip With Sea Salt And Black Pepper (both $12.20 for a 150g bag). The Parsnips have a lovely, natural sweetness to them, balanced by the fiery black pepper. I could eat bags of the beetroot and carrot chips too, they are full of character and taste anything but bland. In the potato range, there’s Mature Cheddar and Chives, Cider Vinegar And Sea Salt, and Sweet Chilli And Red Pepper (all $6.70 for a 150g bag). I like a sharp, tart salt and vinegar chip, so I am not terribly impressed with the rather mild cider vinegar. Swop it for something stronger, I say. Vinegar chips should bite back. But the cheese and chives chips, also flavoured with tangy sour cream, are rich and good.
